Highly accelerating stress testing (HAST) is used to evaluate the reliability of product. It is important to determine the functionality of the equipment, the environment in which it is to operate, and thus the reliability factors. Reliability is the ability of a product to function under given conditions and for a specified period of time, without exceeding acceptable failure limits.
Many tests are used to evaluate the conditions of the product. Some of these conditions are used in order to ensure that the design intent is met. These tests are primarily functional evaluations of the product circuit performances with some product being subjected to burn-in (a short period of time under operating conditions) in order to eliminate infant mortality failures of the component or the circuit.
Before a product design effort can begin, the designers and the members of the supply chain who will build the product, should define and rank the quality processes used to capture the voice of the customer. This design team deals with all the design for excellence characteristics that are shown in the following table.
As can be seen by some of the functions, any part of the product can be improved. The term QFD signifies quality function deployment which is meant to determine the customer’s needs and to find process improvement in product performance, marketing, processing, field service, materials and reliability.
In determining reliability, one looks at the basic requirements which include:
- Years of service
- Acceptable failure rates or probability(ies) as a function of time (MTBF)
- Repair/replacement/upgrade/service/maintenance warranty strategy
- Life cycle environment(s)
- Definition of acceptable performance
- Criticality of function(s) and availability of test equipment
