Signals routed over one another on adjacent layers, tend to cause much greater crosstalk than signals routed side-by-side on the same layer. To prevent this problem, adjacent circuit layers must route perpendicular to one another. This virtually eliminates layer-to-layer coupling since active conductors and passive conductors only cross at the intersection of the perpendicular signals.
