Hello Tom.

Tom I am extremely cornfused about courtyards. I am looking at
the IPC-SM-782 spec on courtyards. I have also downloaded your
document. Defining a Cad Library. I hope that you can clear it up for me once in for all or point me to some document that explains it. I really wanted to attend your talk at UG conference but my schedule did not allow it. I also saw your talk at Plexus. But guess what I had to go to the bathroom right when you were covering the topic of courtyards. Please let me know the next time you are going to give this presentation somewhere I will sit through the whole thing no matter what. Anyway. As you know I am young in the art. I was directed by our manufacturing engineer to leave .4 millimeters between 1608 [0603] components. So I look at the spec in IPC and they have the courtyard spaced .6 mm on the long side and .3 mm on the short side away from the component. I am looking at Defining a Cad Library and it says that courtyards should never touch. So when you lay down a component, what do you do. Space the courtyards some fixed distance apart and set the body to body clearances at 0 or some other small number. Anyway if you could point me to a document or give me a brief breakdown I would appreciate it.

Thanks

John Foster

John,

My next presentation is Tuesday in Dallas, TX at the IPC Designer Learning Symposium. Can you make it? Just in case you can't, here's some info for you.

pcbstandards.com has produced the next generation of CAD Land Patterns that will be coming from IPC this fall. We are a little faster than they are.

Courtyards are the placement boundry, but not the manufacturing boundry. Placement courtyards are not supposed to touch each other. You are supposed to run Tools/Verify Design/Clearance/Setup/Body to Body & Placement Outline (turned on)/OK and get "No Errors Found!".

You need to set your "Body to Body" clearance in Setup/Design Rules/Default/Clearance to what ever extra you need for a specific manufacturer. The most common space for a courtyard beyond the part body and land pattern is 0.25mm (0.010").

Thanks Tom.

As much as I would like to see the presentation. Dallas will be a
little tough. I have gotten used to the Temecula commute but
Dallas is just a little far.

Thanks for the input
