[pcbpartner] Solar cell maker E-Ton Solar Tech posted losses of NT$46.8 million (US$1.49 million) or NT$0.21 per share, in the first quarter of 2010. Non-operating losses, yield rates and customer mix were the main reasons for the poor results, according to company president Ian Chao.

Business operation was profitable in the first quarter but overall results were hampered by NT$125.9 million in non-operating losses, Chao added.

Losses from US-based subsidiary Gloria Solar International Holdings (GIH) amounted to US$72 million, mainly due to low capacity utilization at Adema Technologies, a GIH wholly-owned subsidiary, Chao said. Other non-operating losses included a NT$86 million write-off of 60% of its provision of bad debts. The rest will be written off in the second quarter.

With the China market accounting for more than 30% of its orders in the first quarter, average gross margin were 6.22%, Chao pointed out, adding that the company is currently reorganizing its customer mix to improve pricing.

Manufacturing cost also saw an increase with lower yield rate due the company's production ramp to fulfill rising demand and rush orders, said Chao.

As overall demand in the solar sector continues heating up, E-Ton's losses were a surprise to many, especially with positive news coming from fellow Taiwan-based solar makers.

Gintech Energy recently announced first-quarter earnings of NT$1.04 billion or NT$3.26 per share.

Neo Solar Power's shipments in the first quarter were satisfactory, and earnings should exceed NT$2 per share, according to market watchers. Motech Industry has yet to publish first-quarter results, but the company indicated that it was profitable in the period.
