Then purpose of this forum is for the users to communicate what they would like to see different about the forums, websites, or pcbstandards database...or to ask questions.
For questions like "How do I use the smilies?" and "How do I link to this picture?", see:

This is a work in progress and I welcome comments. If it looks like we need a new forum, we will add one. If it looks like a forum is not needed, we can get rid of it. Thanks!

I like these forums.
(whispers) I think some pcb designers are shy and don't post alot.
I on the other hand just heard about this place and plan to post all my woes of PCB design and rants when I find the reasonnn.
vbulletin is a good forums oh so much better than html posting forums such as is found of certian pcb mag-azines sites :) I was close to launching my own. Now that ya'll have done it (Yes texas pcb designer here) I will gladly join. Plus I got a great user name before it was taken.
Is there any census on how many pcb designers there are in the USA alone?

I have a feeling that there will be a lot of posts as soon as people find out about it. Since the forums really only came online this weekend, it will take some days before it snowballs.
I am pleased with the numbers so far. For those that don't know the beauty of Vb software and forums in general compared to email lists, they will see how helpful this can be.
The numbers of pcb designers in the USA? I have read it once..I think from PCD mag....must be over 30,000???
Anyone else know?

I have been waiting for someone to start a forum like this! The listservers are pretty cumbersome.
I do like the buttons for message enhancements. So much easier than typing html commands!

Thanks Pete!
There are so many advantages of forums over email lists! We have had a ton of positive comments.

Okay, we repainted the place and plopped our logo on the top. Any thoughts on the colors? Too much?
I am happy to finally have replaced the stock Vbulletin logo with our's. The colors are growing on me, but I might still tweak the background shades which have a hint of purple in them. The stock Vbulletin buttens are still as they are. I could change them also at some point to a different color.

Everything is looking so professional and snazzy.
Keep up the great work guys!!!

Thanks Ryan! We focused at first on organization and content, but it's nice to have it looking good too. :)
One major next step in addition to the move to the new "bigass" (tm) server, is the creation of the PCBStandards store where we will offer some cool products for sale. It is hoped that if we can sell a few things here or there, it will cover the costs of running this site.

I have been hounding Cadence to start an Allegro forum for quite a while. Looks like I can let'em off the hook now.
I am a moderator at another heavily modified Vb forum but it's mostly general chit-chat and some general PC tech help.
Nice forum guys....I'll be around quite a bit :)
and I'll pass along the word to some of my PCB Designer friends.

Cadence has an exploder going, and has for years now. Find it at: http://www.cadenceusers.org go to the PCB section. This is an active emailer for Cadence users. You can also find a Specctra one at: http://www.specctra.com and/or http://www.specctra.org depending on your preference.
These have been very useful for me, but pcbstandards.com (thanks Randy and Tom) is a great collection of materials for PCB design. No one has taken the extra steps Tom has to post Cadence "stuff" like pcbstandards.com has for PADS.

If you REALLY want a forum, start it yourself!
Randy and Tom started this one and I started a Viewdraw group a couple of years ago. I asked for a Viewdraw group to be provided for a long time, it never was so I started one myself and to tell the truth, it has grown beyond my expectations!

Yahoo, MSN, Delphiforums, and others all provide reasonably priced and workable forums. For distribution of BIG files, like Randy is doing, you have to start your own solution.

Since the pcbstandards forums got started there have been 2,442 posts (not counting this one) by 197 members. There are 492 members registered. All of the posting has been done by 40.04% of the members and the top 10 posters have accounted for 62.98%. 59.96% of all members have not posted even once.
Can you tell who has time to kill today? :)

I think the percentage of posters is actually pretty high here. Elsewhere on forums, often less than 10-20% of the users post. And for every registered user, thjere are 3-4 or more lurkers who read and never post.

Yeah, the percentage is pretty high compared to other boards. I wasn't intending a slam on anyone. Just thought the numbers were interesting.

How can I see all new posts posted yesterday or from the last week.
I use the "View new posts" a lot, but sometimes I close it prematurely and that resets the Post time.
The current search requires me to search on some text and I only want to search by date...
Any suggestions or am I missing something?

Would deleting your cookies work? Or, would that cause all messages to be markes as unread?

Exactly, it would see that as all messages are unread.
The cookie tells the site when you were last here. If you come to the site and then leave, it will reset the cookie.
You can do searches on text of course, contrained by date fields. But you probably knew that. :)
The key is not to quit prematurely.

Are you sure about that? I can search for new posts, read some or none, quit and come back and do new search and they are still there along with any new posts.

Mark,
I've noticed that as well. It seems to be dependant on how long you've been off the site and if you've closed your browser in the interim.
Randy,
Is a time based search possible with these boards? It would be cool to be able to search "all posts in the last xx hours."

In this version, the New Posts feature is based soley on your cookies. You can search on something specific based on time (since yesterday for example). The new version is supposed to have a lot more features. Maybe they will have addressed it.
There is a setting in the forum of how long you have to be on for the cookies to be reset. But I am not sure how consistent it is.
