Bummed out without help.
My company just upgraded my hardware to a sweet 17" widescreen laptop.
It came with a huge 200gb HD 2g ram and a fairly good Nvidia dual output display, a 2ghz T7200 2core duo CPU. The darn thing even has Bluetooth, 802.11g. And to top it off a fingerprint reader for password security. Well I attempted to install Pads. Nope wont go. I guess Pads is not supported by Vista, or visaversa. Well I reformated with XP. But the stupid laptop manufactures do not supply XP drivers for any of the hardware. Even the hardware vendors dont have XP drivers. I am SOL!

Why doesnt pads have a vista driver by now.

Guess I have to return or run in 640x480 mode.

BTH it was a Toshiba P105

vdesigner99,

I got this blurb in an email from Mentor back in April. Looks like you've got a while to wait.

"Vista Support coming
To keep up with the latest technology from Microsoft, PADS plans to support Vista in a maintenance release at the end of the year. Please note, Vista support for the current PADS2007 release is not planned."

Umm that laptop model use to come with XP before Vista came out...are you sure there arent XP drivers from Toshiba's site?

I would to ANYONE wanting to "upgrade" to vista, to dual boot with XP because of multiply issues that Vista needs to work out.....

PS I see toshiba has about 10 different versions of the P105, do you have more complete model number? Should be something like "Satellite P105-S9722"

Have you considered a Vitual XP machine? If you had Vista Ultimate or Business you should be able to download it for free from MS ->

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=28C97D22-6EB8-4A09-A7F7-F6C7A1F000B5&displaylang=en

Alternatives are SWsoft's Parallels Workstation ($50) and VMware Inc.'s VMware Workstation ($189).

This should allow you to install PADS2007 on a vitual XP machine running under Vista.

I have experienced the same problem but I unfortunately have Vista Home Premium and I'm not sure whether I want to stump up for the upgrade to allow me to download the VPC for free, or just buy an alternative VPC.

If anyone has any experience of VPCs and Vista can they post please..?

Cheers,

D

Hi Folks,

Just to follow up on the message from earlier....Done some more digging and found that Sun provide a free VM called xVM Virtual Box. It can be downloaded from

http://www.sun.com/software/products/virtualbox/get.jsp

I am running Pads 2007 on XP running on a xVM Virtual Box running on Vista Home Premium. I am no IT expert but installation was straight forward (about 15 Mins). I created a virtual PC and then I installed XP using my original XP disk.

So far everything seems OK but you may want to try it before going for the format C: option.

Hope this helps,

DaveH

Good find DavH, when i was in the industry I ran all my CAD applications via Virtual machines they all took such special setups that I didnt want to screw up my main machine.

During Christmas went shopping for a laptop for my wife - hunted in vain for one with XP - talking to salesmen at BestBuy and CircuitCity - at least here they now carry in stock most of their laptops with XP - a lot of people resent M$ forcing Millenium II down our throats.

Now there is a version of 2007 that's written for Vista, but I wanted to run 2005 on Vista. So I copied the entire install CD to the hard disk, then opened properties for every executables within that saved CD and changed the compatibility to run as XP SP2 and to run as administrator. I also changed the properties, in the same manner to all of the executables that were installed. Worked like a charm. I now have Pads 2005 running on Vista.

I posted this just in case anyone else might have this need.

If you want to install Pads in Vista instead of XP within a Virtual Machine :

- right-click on setup.exe and check "XP SP2" in the compatibility tab
- install product
(the browse button for a license may not work but you can write the path in the "invisible box")
- when asked for reboot click "later"
- go to C:\MentorGraphics\win32 (installation folder)
- right-click on configurator.exe and check "XP SP2" and "run as administrator" in the compatibility tab
- reboot
- click on the icon is asked for "windows has blocked startup program"
- on this icon choose run->blocked program->configurator to allow the program to run!

That's it!
