View Full Version : Board Station netlist for Allegro
How do you export a netlist from BoardStation Design Architect for Allegro??? Also, is there anything that can convert Boardstation schematics to Capture? Is EDIF relevant to this?

I need to research how to get a netlist out of Design Architect but i know E-Studio can read in many different kinds of a schematics and export netlists......

Disaster Architect does maintain a netllist as well as a comps file - I don't really think it's meant to be used as a front end for another tool. As for EDIF I don't think Mentor supports it - it's pretty much dead anyway.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It looks like E-Studio is the answer, IF I had a friggin EDIF license... We'll see if I can get my hands on that. There's gotta be a tool that reads in mentor nets and comps and spits out Allegro Logic though ... you would think ... maybe?

OmniNet might, it does all kinds of netlist conversions.....

Carl,
The problem with the comps file is it's basically a footprint list - and would never match your symbols - you probably could ascii edit it though.

Hi all,
Design Architect uses a binary Database, to get things out from there you have to write a C program by using Mentors ddp library function. The Job must first be saved in Archive Mode; to make shure all tings in one container, schematic, symbols etc.

Not true in this case the nets, comps, and I believe geoms files are all ascii - as for their usefullness in creating something for Allegro, I have my doubts, heck Allegro is even touchy with Orcad.

you talking about Boardstation PCB ( Layout), I think we talk about Design Architect, what is the Schematik Aplikation.
Rolf
Its Design Architect with LMS

Ahhhh, you would need to take it to the next level - Package - nothing but headaches there, do you absolutely have to use the DA data? It really isn't meant to work with anything other than BoardStation. - Wait a minute, just scrolled up and you mentioned having a nets and comps file - open it in notepad and see if it's ascii, if it is then maybe Omninet (RSI) might work, or Router Solutions might do it for you.

@skip,
Design Architect has no Comps and no Nets File, sorry, but you don't know what you talking.

Are you going to make me dig in our old old box of Boardstation dongles and find the DA dongle just to settle this? ;)
You are both right.
If you are talking just Design architect, it is binary, and the only way to move data between EDA tools is with EDIF.
I was looking into that, and I was looking into a way to take DA schematic through "package" (known as Board Architect in the latest versions of Board Station) and take into Allegro.
Now, when you go through package, you get Ascii files. The question is, can you take those ascii files and convert them to an Allegro netlist, or Allegro Logic. The answer that I have found is yes, with third party software available through router solutions (which is now owned by mentor.)
whether or not we are actually going that route is another question, but atleast its an option. The schematic translation between DA and Orcad Capture that I was looking into has solutions, but nothing very good. Even though EDIF can be moved between programs, you would still have to manually integrate your library parts, and the two systems use different grids for their parts, so they are pretty incompatible.

I know what I'm talking about because if you read what I said - Carl said he HAD a nets and comps file - now SDASU.

There is a way to do schematic translation from Design Architect to OrCAD Capture
and EDIF200 is an answer.
You need to export EDIF200 schematic file from a Design Architect design (Mentor provides a tool).
and then use OrCAD's EDIF200 Importer to import the schematic into OrCAD.
It is possible to scale schematics while importing and try to place library parts
on OrCAD's grid.
E-studio Pro from Elgris has the capability to convert EDIF files ( 200 schematic/300schematic) to OrCAD Capture too.
Elgris gurantees 100% netlist conversion for all schematic tranlsations it performs
in house.
Please, contact Elgris for details,

Humm whens the last time that tool was truly updated and how does the netlist translation compare to Omninet software package?

E-studio Pro was updated on a regular basis.
There was a new release produced in July 2007 with updates for all
major translators.
E-studio Pro is used a lot as a schematic translation tool.
I'm not familiar with OMNINET but it sounds like a netliist conversion tool.
The thread here was about Design Architect to OrCAD schematic translation.
If you want to know more about E-studio Pro, please contact Elgris direct.

Igor,
I'm sure your company has a fine product but - please re-read the title of the thread - it's about netlist translation.

I might have tried Elgris, but they didn't offer a trial version that let YOU do the translation. They take your file, do god knows what, and then give you back the schematic.
And if you run a tight ship, and want your real approved schematic parts in there, you have to rip it apart anyway.
Your better off hiring a temp, or letting a rookie re-enter the dang things. Of course if I had gotten a week temp license, and I could get the thing to sing for me, I may have a different opinion.
