If anyone out there is using IntelliCAD for mechanical drafting please post your comments.
IntelliCAD boosts that their mechanical drafting tool is offered for as low as $149.00 US dollars and can read in AutoCAD .DWG & .DXF files.
They also claim that it is easier to use than AutoCAD and has all the funtionality. I really need a true user to verify these claims. Thanks.

I got IntelliCAD when I received the 9.2.3 version of OrCAD Layout. It was included in the package for free. The 9.2.3 version has only been out for a few weeks so I haven't logged many hours with it. The IntelliCAD version in 9.2.3 looks just like the free version available off the IntelliCAD website.
I have successfully loaded DWG and DXF files with it (about 12 files so far). The UI is not hard to learn.
I only use it to examine DXF plots that come out of Layout and add some annotation: dimension lines/arrows and some boiler-plate text for the Board House.
I haven't stressed the tool but then again, it has never crashed on me.
Try downloading the free version and giving it a spin.

Tom,
I've used IntelliCAD, not extensively and not recently, but I was impressed with it. From what I've heard it was developed by former AutoDesk personell and used a lot of AutoCAD code. The lack of 3D modeling was the reason we've never purchased it here. At the time, I could load a drawing done in AutoCAD13 into IntelliCAD, make changes, save and load it back into AutoCAD without any problems at all. I could also create new IntelliCAD drawings and load them into AutoCAD without problems. As far as I could tell it was 100% compatable. Of course that may have changed but if not, it's certainly worth it.
