I have 2 problems:
1. i can't find the function to update the parts in my schematic/pcb if i change the decal or gate in the library. Is there a function like that in PADS? I'd imagine there must be.

2. How do i make holes in my pcb board without doing it as a "pad"? Some of the parts I'm using have studs that needs holes. I can make a hole in the decal by adding a pad and make it non plated, but is there a hole function?

Eternally grateful for your help.

Here's what I know about the questions you ask:

1. No there is no built in update facility, you either have to manually update your decal used on the board or delete it, (them) and replace them, or you can try what I've heard works - ascii out everything except parts - when you read it back in it should place new parts from the library.

2. From Pads Help:

mounting holes
Many (but not all) boards have mounting holes. Mounting holes are typically located around the perimeter of a board (most often in the corners). They are drilled holes, used to mount a printed circuit board to the finished product (for example, a mother board mounted to the computer casing), or used to attach bolt-on components to the printed circuit board (for example, stiffeners and ejector tabs).

There are two types of mounting holes: plated and non-plated. Plated mounting holes have copper inside the hole and usually have a large annular ring of copper on both sides of the board connected by this copper cylinder (plating) inside the hole. These holes are typically connected to the GROUND bus or plane on the board and provide a method for grounding the board circuitry to the enclosure (for shielding purposes). The mounting hole ring diameter is usually slightly larger than the diameter of the head of the screw that will be used to fasten the board to the mounting device within the enclosure. Non-plated mounting holes are used for the same purpose, the only difference being that they are not internally plated and do not have a copper ring, therefore they are not used for grounding the board to the enclosure.

Tips:

Plated mounting holes cannot be used as tooling holes as the thickness of the copper plating can vary and violate the close tolerance required by a tooling hole. Non-plated mounting holes can sometimes work double duty as tooling holes because there is no internal plating, therefore the tolerance of the hole size can be more closely controlled and fit within the requirements of a tooling hole.

Use the Decal Editor and the Pad Stacks dialog box to create tooling holes. Save the single-terminal object as a part to the library for reuse.

So, that means I have to use the add pads function to add a hole?

Or make the hole a decal.

....that's a great idea! thanks skip

I make mounting holes just another part that is non-ECO registered. This way you can add the holes on the fly while in layout, without having to worry about a new netlist ripping them out for you. You can still add them to a schematic if connection is needed.

Okay, I made a decal for a mounting hole and I'm using 2005 Layout SPac2. I want to add this part in Layout like Jimbo suggested -- how exactly is that done? I see no "Add Part..." feature in my toolbar only "Get Drafting Item from Library..."; if I use Logic to add the part I get, "WARNING: Component has no gates." and I can't add it in there, either. I have not tried the via thing but that sounds like it might work, too. Still, I would like to include it as a part. I like to see this stuff on my schemo especially if it's a necessary connection to GND.

I even tried to add the prepackaged MTHOLEn parts that came with my licensed copy and i can't git them in there neither. And when I try to do a search in Help for "add mounting hole" all I get is the Webster's dictionary of the differences between a mounting and tooling hole, nothing on how exactly to add them to my design (although there is more info on tooling then on mounting).

All i wanna do is put some dad gum 188 mil mounting holes on my gosh darn layout; i've got an outline, all the shapes placed but i have not routed. What am I missink?

Nevermind. ECO tool -> Add Connection. Me not smart sometime.
