I had lunch with some friends yesterday, their company is looking to upgrade from Pads to a higher end package, management wanted to go with BoardStation, or evaluate it, Mentor told them they were no longer recommending BS for new installations and suggested Expedition.

Wow! Is torMentor coming to grips with common sense? BS is a dinosaur! But... if you have the background you can make some crazy money... $$$$$

Ha. :0

I'll say it one more time, I used BS for 5 years (greatly underpaid), and they would have to more than double my current salary, (not underpaid), to even think about going back to BS, almost all of the BS designers I've met either started with BS and don't know any better or they learned it back in the days of Scicards.

Considering i see BS2006 on mentor site I dont think its dead yet. I know some designers/customers that still prefer BS, perhaps its because of the cool backwords C stroke haha :D (BS humor)

Of course where i come in is translating all that stuff around to suite everyones needs....

Yeah but a lot of the packages around including Allegro have strokes options, although few use them, it's a "growing up using BS and strokes thing" :D

The big problem is legacy designs, and libraries - clearly if you have autoactive RE, you should be able to easily transition to Expedition, but Mentor in it's infinite wisdom and greed has disabled that ability.

Well i need to put the "new" ODB++ export option for boardstation through the ringer a bit more and see how complete it is in translation.

It's a step in the right direction to a more "universal" export......

Ahhhh, your approach is similar to using specctra, but a little more on the devious side, (devious clever not devious nasty), export to ODB++ import to Cam - export to Cad, using presumably Cam350, while hoping that EDA packages will soon import ODB++ - on that one don't hold your breath.

layer mapping, is the big obstacle.

Yes by the time you "wash" it through 2 or 3 or 4 programs you end up losing to much data and it would have just cost the same to just redo the design, but customers still pay for it so i will still do it, plus it kinda fun :)
