Hi,

I'm a PADS PowerPCB user for long time. Recently I got a new job and my company wants me to switch to Allegro.

Could anybody advise to how to setup the Allegro to have the nice "UNDO/REDO" feature as in the Power PCB?

Thanks

Hi Cfan,

Undo/Redo is a function in v15, but not at v14 or below. So, get them to upgrade to v15.2 (stable) and you're good to go. Version 15 has been out for well over a year, and v15.5 is about to be released. Upgrade if possible.

For v14 and below the process has always been:

1) Save often, in case you do need to UNDO a hugh mistake (errr... enhancement from the engineer).
2) In the process (like add connect), RMB and Oops to back up.
3) Try not to use the "Done" function in your process. If you are done, activate another menu pick. That way it leaves your current process running, and you can use Oops.

Hope this helps.

What part of CA are you in? So CAL? No CAL? Does CFan represent Charger fan? Not used to seeing companies upgrading to Allegro from PADS, usually the pther way around.

Good day.

HUH!

We upgraded FROM Pads to Allegro, Pads simply choked on the stuff we were doing, (Mentor at one point advised us to try using an earlier version), kinda indicates what Mentor is doing to Pads - and apparently it's intentional.

With torMentor you have:

Mentor Boardstation - High end $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
AutoActiveRE - high end... much like the Specctra extention to Allegro
Mentor Expedition - mid-tier $$$
Mentor PADS - mom-n-pop, garage style designs, cheap $

So what would make tMentor the most money???? porting all the PADS users to at least Expedition. There's simply no monies to be made from PADS yearly maintanence renewals (of which there's probably close to none).

Cadence, on the other hand, merrily goes along with an Allegro platform, of which you can get different flavors: Studio, Performance Package, Designer, Expert, whatever suits your needs. Upgrades are a bit painful, who's aren't? Functions are missing, or badly implemented... but there are SKILL routines available, and the scripting function (SKILL) has a users group now. Yes, we didn't have UNDO/REDO for the longest time, but there's always workarounds for the fun-at-heart. :)

Good luck with Allegro Skip. If you need answers or help, reach me directly at mailto:cadpro2k@dacafe.com I got library parts up the kazo. :)

Good day.

Hi CadPro:

I'm living and working in N. CA, Bay Area. C= Clark
I'm familiar with PADS and used it in previous jobs.
My new company already has Allegro installed therefore I'm forced to use the software (v15.1) for my job. To my opinion, Allegro is very "user unfriendly".

I remember there was a post in this forum that Allegro can be setup to have the UNDO/REDO functions like PADS.
Do you know how?

Thanks

Clark.

Hi Clark,

I've heard many PADS users complain that Allegro is 'user unfriendly', so you're not the first, not last. I'm a long time Cadence user, who's used PADS for a year (v4.0) and torMentor's Expedition for a few months. Each has it's quirks. The money's with the high-end tools though. Wish I had the torMentor Boardstation experience. It pays the most, still. I took a severe cut in pay with the PADS company. Soon as I could find Allegro work again I was back on the Cadence tools.

Keep an open mind, and you'll catch on to Allegro pretty quick, especially if you have good mentors there at the company. Some things are very easy (setting up and creating gerbers/plots); some aren't (library routines, and quick & dirty boards).

In the Bay area, you'll be glad to have Cadence under your belt. Here in SD, it's very much a PADS town (cheap labor). :)

Good day.

That's all BS has going for it, the bucks, even the Mentor trainers will tell you that - "of course this would be a lot easier in "xxx" package, but you'll make more money wih BS", (direct quote), thats all I had been using for the past 2 years before coming here where I work now, using Allegro and Pads - as for ease of use it depends on the person - Allegro seems to fit like a glove for me, Pads I'm ok with but, a lot of margin for error in that package. Be thankful that you're not saddled with BS it's by far the worst PCB layout tool I've ever encountered in terms of ease of use and flexibility.

HI Skip,

Ditto, ditto, ditto. Couldn't agree more. Problem is, in San Diego, riht now there's at least 3 openings for Sr BS people, that I know of! The monies there, I just don't have experience with BS, yet.

BUT! I'm on re-deployment (job moving overseas) next month, and will be un-employed, so I might just take the free training Mentor offers and go for BS and AutoActiveRE experience.

I like Cadence, but if there isn't a company in SD where I can work using Allegro/Concept/Capture/Specctra I need to look at options. Got 4 months severance to contemplate things too. :)

Good day.

The only free training courses that I've heard about are for Expedition, actually I think Mentor is passively discouraging designers moving to the BoardStation platform, if you do find one, you'll have a very interesting experience! Forget every concept you have of how a PCB design tool works! (eventually you will see a few similarities but it takes a long time).

As for work possibilities, try 911EDA or Bill Lewis at Vision Design.
