hi mitch ,

i've got a pcb design to be done in which the plane will have 230volts ,plz comment on the material ,thickness to be used for fab and the area to be provided for the plane

hi sudhagar,

go to www.ultracad.com and download their voltage calculator and run the 230V value, and get a trace width. if the width is exceedingly large make it a plane area, preferably on the external layers. remember to use additional vias to connect these large trace (plane) areas.

if the power is of A.C current ,in what way the calculation has to be done

You need to find and study a copy of EN60950 this replaces UL 950 there are many conditions and rules that apply to voltages of this type, there is no 1 rule to follow. A good site to visit is www.creepage.com it has a spacing calculator based on the rules laid down in EN60950.
