Has anyone tried Auto Place? I would like to use it for placing series termination. How do I add the Place_Tag property?

Thanks,

Peter

If it doesn't say AutoRoute, I don't use it. :)

Kidding... :)

Very funny. I am just checking it out. I want to see if it can be somewhat useful.

Hi Peter,

Actually it can be very useful. What I've done in the past is place all my parts, using Autoplace, to verify that all the parts have 'qualified' footprints associated with them. I'd autoplace the parts, then run REPORT/SYMBOL LIBRARY PATH and make sure they've all come out of a 'released' library.

So back to my question. What about the Place_tag property?

You can do a Quick-place and edit properties:SYMBOLS, then add the PLACE_TAG property. Then delete all components and you're ready to roll.

Personally I have never had much use for the Autoplace or even Autoroute. I wouldn't mind autorouting by pick, but I have yet been able to get Allegro(Specctra to do that for me).

I just want to use it for places where I have 64 series termination resistors. It will save some time. Route by pick works for me. What version are you using?

15.1, which by the way I don't think I like very much.

I don't like the way it handles shapes.

Shapes is a whole new ballgame with v15. Back to the experimentation table. I've worked with both PADS and Expedition and the shapes mode is much more like they do it. Is that good? I'll have to experiment more before I give an opinion. From what I've seen a more experienced person do (and they're not a Cadence employee) with planes leads me to believe they'll be better.

But, if you're still not comfortable with dynamic planes you can always revert and leave them as 'static' planes (like V14 and past versions). That's up to you.

The dynamic plane capabilities seem to require you to be more creative, but that could be just me. I do know the dynamic planes leave you lots more options than PADS for voiding and finding islands and the like.

Good day.
