We are converting our parts libraries to the "company part number system". This doesn't pose much of a problem with us board layout guys being that our numbers and the company part numbers are easily cross-referenced.

We are however looking into an automated updating from our Item Master System (Great Plains) to our Parts Libraries. ie. temporary parts are created in an un-registered parts library by our parts librarian. Those parts would have a complete list of attributes (values, vendor and part number, description, height etc.) but would have a temporary part number. After a new part has been through our system and has aquired a "company part number", the item master would run a scipt to compare the temporary part's attributes in our temporary library to the same attributes of the parts in our main system and match them up, and update the temporary part to it's new company number....lost yet??.....It can be taken further, when in Power Logic, running a script that would make the same comparison between the temp part which is in the schematic and the same part which has it's new company number and is in it's appropriate library, and thus updating temp parts in a design to a current registered system part. This schematic update would be performed by our parts librarian.

Sounds confusing....simply put- Our system would keep our parts libraries updated, so our board layout guys would always have all of our current registered parts to use.

Does anyone know of anyone doing anything remotely close to this??

Hi, there is a tool for PowerLogic to help maintaining libraries. I believe you could use it for your purpose. Check http://www.designsystems.fi/poweraccess/poweraccess.htm
