Tom,

Has a date been set when IPC 7351 will be released yet, I see that it has been put forward for ballot but how much longer before its available?

Cheers

Matt

Matt,

We are very close to releasing the IPC-7351 3-Tier library specification. We are in the final quality control phase.

1. The land pattern naming convention is under final review this week. IPC and the land pattern committee ripped the original land pattern naming created over the past 3 years by Wind River and cleaned it up. They kept all the best ideas developed by Wind River but also contributed major improvements. I believe that with the new naming convention, anyone can look at a component data sheet and accurately determine the land pattern name without a lookup table or a search engine. This will be a free download from the IPC website in September.

2. The component Zero Rotation is targeted for finalization by August 22. There will be a public document that depicts the zero pick and place rotation for every major component family. It will also illustrate the location of pin 1. This will be a free download from the IPC website in September.

3. The IPC-7351 land pattern calculator is out for beta test at over 50 companies right now and we're waiting for any complaints, comments or suggestions. So far everyone is happy. The IPC mathematical formulas provide great solder joint analysis. There will be a user friendly "trimmed down" version of the calculator for free download from the IPC website. A more robust IPC-7351 calculator will be for sale for $300 and will allow the user to adjust the fabrication, assembly and component tolerances to allow the user to create custom parts for a specific manufacturing process.

4. The IPC-7351 land pattern wizard is under development and will be completed by the 1st of September. The new wizard will be capable of auto-generating CAD parts in 10 different CAD formats. PADS will be the first modules to be completed. By the end of the year the wizard will be producing "OffSpring" output. Every CAD vendor will be given the open source code for OffSpring in September. It shouldn't take them too long to be able to import OffSpring format. This will eliminate the need for us to create independent translators of each CAD tool. In the mean time, while we're all waiting for OffSpring, the different wizard modules will cost $300 for each specific CAD tool. Each wizard will require a calculator so a PADS IPC-7351 Wizard will sell for $600. I free demonstration version of the wizard will be available on the IPC website.

5. The IPC-7351 library documentation is being finalized and will be ready for free download in PDF format on the IPC website in September. It will only contain the parts that are currently represented in the IPC-782. All the other library documentation for thousands of other parts will be available through a web-enabled library search engine on a website. This will be available by the end of September.

6. IPC-7351 CAD specific libraries in 12 different formats will be available for free download in September. These will not be on IPC's website because they do not want to take any responsibility due to the fact that if they do not provide every CAD format in the world that the can be sued. So the IPC-7351 CAD libraries will be given to each CAD vendor to place on their CAD software for customer installation. They will also be available on other websites TBD soon.

7. There will also be a 3D-Modeler that auto-generates components on the fly per the given component dimensional data and you will have the ability to superimpose the physical part with the land pattern to derive the solder joint analysis data. This is a very futuristic tool that will help solve most assembly problems.

We are all extremely excited about this new CAD library concept. After 22 years of effort in an attempt to standardize this aspect of the electronic product development, our investment and hard work is finally paying off.

We believe that we are on the way to elimination of duplication and the reduction of errors and cost due to the implementation of a "One World Library" and the acceleration of product development through standardization.

Of course everything will be in metric units only to make the process simple and easy to create and maintain. I could not imagine trying to maintain two separate 3-Tier libraries.

There will be several press releases that annouce all the details coming out in September and October from several sources.

Tom - we have adapted the new naming convention output from the IPC 7351 (very nice) all looks good, however I have notice that the inside heel to heel output has increased on the 7351_Calc_sport.xls… will users be able to modify the default outputs for solderjoints and courtyards? Is this control possible with the latest 7351_Calc_sport.xls?

Thank you.
Raul

Raul,

The IPC-7351 Sport Calculator contains the default tolerances and is to be used as a temporary land pattern calculator until next week when we release the IPC-7351_LandCalc_V1.0. The new IPC-7351_LandCalc_V1.0 will allow users to modify any of the tolerances they wish to. The solder Joint Analysis will always provide you with information that you need for accurate assembly.

The new IPC-7351_LandWiz will be coming out in two weeks (mid September) and the user can modify all values including Part Type attributes. Once again, The solder Joint Analysis table will always provide you with information that you need for accurate assembly so you know what the minimum and maximum solder joints will be for heel and toe for all environment 3-Tiers.

We are also working on a new "Super Calculator" which will be an actual software product and will store a ton of data. This new product will eventually become the standard library documentation because all standard part values will be stored in it. This new tool will have 3D component modeling so you can superimpose the physical part with the land pattern. You'll have the ability to change the physical part to minimum, nominal or maximum size and retrieve a solder joint analysis from each scenario.

Since this new super calculator will be improved on a daily basis it will be almost impossible to make it a deliverable product. It will more than likely become a web-enabled service with a small yearly access fee.

There's lot's of new automation products and services that are under development. It's going to become really interesting soon.

Tom;

I read a post that you directed to Matt. In that post you said that the naming convention used of the IPC-7351 would be a free download from the IPC website. I went to IPC.org and looked around but was unable to locate it. Using their search function I got a few hits for IPC-7351, but most of these seemed to indicate that a committee was still working on the IPC-7351.

If the naming convention is available, could you send me a copy or point me in a direction were I could get one.

Thanks,
Glen

Hi Glen

You obviously haven't heard that Tom has parted company, here is the copy of naming convention that i have.

Here is the latest Version

1. It will be officially released in January 2004 by IPC.
2. IPC is in the process of checking the final details before the release.

Hello,
is there any IPC-7351 pdf file for download that includes details about the standard, excepting the naming convention?
