Now that was an answer for inquiring minds. :)
Here I am. I took a vacation during the Thanksgiving week. Of course whenever you get back from a vacation your mail box is full, you got phone messages, e-mails, projects are past due, you name it.
Anyway, this week I was really busy trying to roll out some new fantastic library documentation for the connector libraries. Check this out.
We have over 6,000 connectors in the pcbstandards library. We created Excel spread sheets for each connector library. Then we downloaded every connector manufacturers mechanical datasheet for every connector decal and linked them to the lines in the Excel spread sheets.
You can search the Excel spread sheet for names, descriptions, part numbers, etc. and click on the line you searched for and it will activate the correct manufacturers PDF file for that library decal.
The new PDF files take up 70MB, but who's counting when you have 80 Gig hard drives. Anyway, I had to hibernate to create this new product which will be available on pcbstandards.com soon.

Nice!
Yeah here is a little sound about part(ie decal) building that I modified :)
/song about parts
Verse one
Parts parts what a horrible way to die
We all hate to build them but we all try
Now thanks to tom we can build connectors well
cause if you build them wrong to hell goes your design
chorus (all together now)
Parts parts what a horrible way to die
Parts parts what a horrible way to die
Verse two
Oh no parts, parts are not fun
I can build them with a mechanical
Oh, no pin pitch given, oh no lead size,
NO not part parts what a horrible was to die
Chorus (all together now)
Parts parts what a horrible way to die
Parts parts what a horrible way to die
I agree that building library parts is a pain in the royal ass, but it is a necessary part of PCB design. We are trying to, over the next couple of years, build a quality library with good documentation hoping that we can save the PCB design industry thousands of duplicated man hours.
There are some people & companies however that are really pissed off at us because they were planning on selling library parts with visions of huge profit margins.
Example: Mentor Graphics plans on selling a library service for $7,500 per seat per year. Cadence is planning on selling a library service for $6,000 per seat per year. SMT Plus is trying to sell libraries, CADPRO is trying to sell libraries and there are private parties that have developed libraries with hopes to cash in.
The PCB library industry has a retail value of generating over 100 million dollars a year collectively, while our goal is to give them away for free. In the process, we have developed some enemies.
Now how does that song go? Parts parts what a horrible way to die.

i don't think that what these two companies where going to do works, first i never never trust any library from any of these companies until i saw the pcbstandards library...why? because these companies they don't even care about the parts, if they are right or wrong, even manufacturers called the same package in a lot of different ways, and don't mention that even their drawings sometimes are wrong...i use to ccheck a lot the library parts adn now what i use most i the padstack calculator, is great...this library is made by PWB DESIGNERS FOR PWB DESIGNERS because they used it and they are using it and they will be using it, is a pain everytime i changed to a new job i don't trust the libraries they made before so i start creating my own parts.
Thanks
Laszlo
Laszlo,
We are working on a new software program that will run a DRC check on an entire library or just one part.
This new program checks for:
Silkscreen line width and layer
Closed ploygons on Layer_27
Post assembly inspection dot size, location & layer
Padstack accuracy
Assembly ref des on pads
Silkscreen too close to pads
Ref Des size
And much more......
This program checks for all the pcbstandards library criteria and will soon be available soon for everyone to use.
The main purpose for this program is so that everyone can check the quality of their library construction and then submit the decals to us (if you want to) so we can add them to the pcbstandards libraries. We really need contributions from the user base to make this a successful project.

I'M READY TO HELP!!!
Laszlo
Laszlo,
What we are looking for is contributions from people who have possession of any library decals that are not in the current pcbstandards library.
We are primarily looking for connector decals that are built to our library specifications in metric format that have a .PDF file for documentation control.
Secondarily we are looking for all standard components. We believe that we have every QFP, SOIC, BGA, Chip Resistor, Capacitor, Inductor, Tantalum, Transisitor, etc. in the world, built and ready to use in the pcbstandards library. If anyone has a standard part in their library that is not in the pcbstandards libraries, please send them to me along with the manufacturers mechanical data PDF file.
Third, we are looking for help with existing libraries quality control.

well i already talked to randy about this, i found some errors in the documentation, i sent and email on that to him but to be honest i'm a lot busy now, this dxf translations i'm doing are a pain, so as soon i'm finished with that i'll contact you, but i have some questions about building the parts too, i'm willing to send the ones i made already (not to many) they are all for the SML library, the questions i have are regarding keepouts and courtyards...about the errors i found, i don't remember exatly where i saw them but i will.

One could be led to believe Tom is a guy to be respected and admired, just look at the number of replies and number of times people have visited here.
But let's put this in perspective, and also to keep Tom from getting a big head. Ratkiller has twice as many people looking at the thread he started.
All hail the real king, ratkiller!
I'm just trying to help everyone. Not really trying to get brownie points. My head is still the same size it's always been.
Once again, the only reason for pcbstandards.com and this Forum is because it needs to be done and no one else is doing it. If someone else were willing to volunteer to take over this project I'd gladly show them how to do it. I don't want any spot lights, just elimination of duplication.
However, ratkiller does look quite dashing between those cheerleaders :-).
