I notice in the sample file for PCI that each pin for the edge connector has a 2-D line going down (and off the board) to a larger line (bus?.. they are all connected now). What is the purpose of this? Do I need to add this to my PCI edge connector part? (I did not use the sample file because it is in metric and I am still using mils.)

Thanks.

Good question, simple answer.

We use 2D lines because they do not show up as DRC shorts, as compared to copper.

In order to plate the fingers using nickel/gold or whatever, they fabricator needs to make an electrical connection. On the fabricator's board, the area past the fingers is not routed/cut off yet. The 2D lines will be printed on the substrate and will electrically connect all the fingers. Typically the 2D lines connect to a larger horizontal bar or the shorting bar. This allows the fabricator a place to clip to to provide an electrical connection.

After plating and other processes, the board is routed/scored or cut and the 2D lines are cut away.

What can be real interesting is selective gold plating in the middle of the board, or in the middle of a panel.
