Conductor Impedance Configurations
A. Surface Microstrip - A conductor referenced to a single plane, with organic printed board dielectric between the conductor and plane, and air on the other side of the conductor. In a board with signals on layer 1 and a plane on layer 2, a microstrip transmission line exists between the signal conductor on layer 1 and the plane on layer 2. Since most circuits have solder mask over the surface conductor those configurations should be considered as embedded microstrip.
